Last week, Callum McGregor led Brendan Rodgers’ side to an impressive victory on the European stage in the 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava. Now, on Thursday evening, it is the turn of Elena Sadiku’s side for a huge Champions League match as they gear up for their second leg against Vorskla Poltava. With just one match between the Ghirls and a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage for the first time ever, the Celts are just 90 minutes away from history. Holding a one-goal lead going into the second leg against the Ukrainian champions, it is set to be an extremely exciting evening of action ahead tomorrow evening (KO 19:15pm KO). Speaking to the press this afternoon, Men’s team captain Callum McGregor is hoping he can see the Hoops continue creating more history for the club. He said: “Their growth has been excellent. I was just chatting to Elena (Sadiku) and Natalie (Ross) outside. They are full of confidence, ready to go for the game. Obviously, 1-0 up from the first leg. “The game is growing and growing. The level has got better every year. Obviously, that accumulated in them winning the league for the first time last season. ‘They have a huge chance tomorrow night now to get into the Champions League as well.’ “I know they are all delighted and looking forward to the chance at that. So, here’s hoping they can go and do it.”The Celtic captain is well accustomed to playing in the Champions League against some of the best teams from across the globe. Across the entire club, from the Men’s and the Women’s team’s there has been plenty to enjoy and celebrate in recent years. And there may be even more to celebrate come Thursday evening, should the Ghirls go out and finish the job in Airdrie. “Winning on Thursday night will just continue to add to the feel-good factor at the club,” McGregor said. “I think the one thing with Celtic is everyone who is here, the expectation is to be playing elite level football. “Of course, the Champions League is the elite. It’s so difficult to get there. You play a number of top teams to get yourself in there, and they have done great. “It’s now just about trying to make that last step and I’m sure with the confidence they started the season with, there is no reason why they can’t do it. “I know they will know how difficult the game is going to be. But everyone has full faith to go and do it. That just continues the feel-good factor which is at the club. ‘Elena has built a really strong squad off the back of winning the league last season. So, it’s all set up for them to go and do it.’ “Everybody wants them to do it. They will go out there and trust each other and give their absolute all.” Cheer on the Ghirls in UWCL action With the chance to make more history on the horizon for Celtic FC Women, the Ghirls need your support on Thursday evening (7:15pm KO) Get your tickets online now, and back the Hoops as they look to book their place in the group stages.
