Celtic TV Exclusive Interview: Luke McCowan

Luke McCowan marked the first appearance of the competitive season in the best possible fashion, scoring the winning goal against St Mirren on Flag Day to get the champions’ league title defence off to a perfect start. The midfielder came off the bench to net a late goal and seal a 1-0 victory in front of a packed Paradise, and he spoke to Celtic TV at Lennoxtown to reflect on the late winner. “It was good.” McCowan said of the Flag Day occasion. “You could tell right from the start. The fans were lively and music was blasting, so that was good. It was nice to see everybody coming in numbers at the very start. Even just walking in with the trophy and stuff, so that was good to kind of reflect a touch on last season. “Obviously lifting the flag and stuff is a moment to enjoy, but as the manager and Cal would put it, it’s about seeing it in that moment and then pushing on for this year.” That shift in focus happened swiftly when McCowan was called upon late in the game, and the 27-year-old made an instant impact with a decisive strike that secured the Hoops all three points. “It was brilliant,” he said.  “I mean, that’s what you’re hoping to do when you’re coming off the bench, to make an impact. “You’re hoping to either set someone up or go get the winner. It felt nice to do that in the first game of the season. “It’s funny because literally the first thing I did when I woke up that morning, for some weird reason on my TikTok, was watch last-minute Celtic goals. I was seeing Tom Rogic and a couple of his goals. So that was nice to go in and kinda replicate one of them and go get the winner.”Now all focus turns to a trip to the North-East to face Aberdeen, with Brendan Rodgers’ side returning to Pittodrie for the first time since last season’s final away-day. While Celtic triumphed convincingly that day, the Dons edged the Hoops in the Scottish Cup Final, and McCowan admitted that memory still lingers. “For me personally, I would say so.” he said, when asked if he sees it as a chance to set the record straight.  “But the boys might think differently themselves. When a team beats you or gets one over on you, I’m always thinking about it and can I try and make it personal? “But no, it will be good to go up there and face a team that we obviously faced at the end of last year, and go and put on a good performance in the league. Hopefully, it can lead us to three points again.” Watch the full interview with Luke McCowan now, only on Celtic TV.FixturesAberdeen Vs. Celtic – Sun, Aug 10th 2025, 12:30
