Celtic defender Alistair Johnston says he is edging closer to a return to action as he continues his recovery from injury and admits watching on from the sidelines has only increased his hunger to get back out on the pitch. The Canadian internationalist has been working tirelessly behind the scenes in recent weeks, and speaking exclusively to Celtic TV, he provided a positive update on his progress. “Been really well. Been out a little while now. It’s been a couple of months since I’ve been out there. I’ve been good. I haven’t had any setbacks which has been nice,” he said. ‘I‘’ve done tonnes of work behind the scenes with our medical staff which has been great, and I’m feeling really good which is important obviously.’ “It’s been difficult watching all the matches from the side. As a player, that is probably the hardest thing to do, not being able to affect the game and not feeling like you’re completely part of the group, but that’s fuelled that fire. “We’re getting close now, we aren’t going to put a timeline on it. But yeah, I’m feeling really good.”With a packed run of fixtures coming up between now and the next international break, Johnston knows just how important the coming weeks will be as Celtic prepare for crucial SPFL, League Cup and European tests. “I think with the international window, it’s a bit stop-start. But this block between the October window and November window is packed with massive matches,” he explained. “Not only European but domestically. In the league, a big one at Tynecastle, that’ll be a good atmosphere there, they’ll be pretty rowdy, which will be a good one. “Then a cup semi-final. Whenever you get the chance to play at Hampden it’s massive, and when you see who you’ve drawn for the semi-final it adds a little emphasis to it. “I’ve got plenty of things circled in the calendar I’d like to be back for and be part of. We’ll just see if the body can match the mind there with that kind of stuff. It’s a massive block of games coming up.” Watch the full interview with Alistair Johnston now on Celtic TV for more on his recovery, Colby Donovan’s breakthrough and team togetherness.
