It’s been well documented that Celtic went into last weekend’s Scottish Cup derby at Ibrox with a raft of players missing. Crucially, one of the most vital players missing was also a very late call-off as captain, Callum McGregor had to stand down for the game and it was none other that Liam Scales who stepped into the breach. The Irishman told Celtic TV: “It was a brilliant result, a brilliant experience for me personally, but the amount of work we put in to get that result, it’s such a great feeling for all the work to pay off. “We’re all delighted, we had a couple of days off to recover, and we’re back in to prepare for the next game, but you know how big a result it was and now we just want to go on and win the cup.” And as for being handed the captaincy for the game, he added: “I just found out about an hour before the game, we got into the dressing room, and I sort of realised it was going to be me. ‘It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve had the chance to do it a couple of times now but not in a game this big.’ “It was a really proud moment but at the same time you can’t let it change anything, you just have to do the same things you usually do. “Cal was still there, Cal was still in the dressing room spurring the boys on, he was the one leading us as well from the dressing room. “So he’s a top captain, a top leader and to be able to step up when he’s not available, it’s a big honour.”Today, it’s Motherwell who are the visitors for Celtic’s first home game after four matches on the road. Scales said: “It’s going to be a difficult game. It’s completely different to Motherwell teams over the past few seasons with the way they’ve been playing. “Tactically they are really good, they are good defensively, they haven’t conceded many goals and they have exciting attacking players as well that we need to try and nullify. “So, it’s going to be a difficult game, we’ve had tough games against them already this season but we know it’s massive for us to get a good result and we just want to do things the way we know we can to get that result.” To watch the full Liam Scales interview, subscribe to Celtic TV.
