SWPL Friday, February 06, 2025Tannadice Park DUNDEE UNITED…0 CELTIC…6 (McAneny 2, 88, Smith 6, 73, Harrison 19, 41, 58, Loferski 85) Celtic FC Women took temporary top spot on Friday evening after running out 8-0 winners against Dundee United. Four first half goals from Maria McAneny, Jenny Smith, and an Abi Harrison double set the tone for the Hoops in the city of discovery. The Hoops then matched that tally in the second half as Abi Harrison completed her hat-trick, alongside further strikes for Jenny Smith and Maria McAneny, as well as Kit Loferski getting on the scoresheet. Marking their return to league duties, the Ghirls travelled up to Dundee for an exciting evening of action under the lights at Tannadice. Making three changes to her side, Elena Sadiku introduced Bruna, Jenny Smith and January signing Abi Harrison to the side, with the forward making her first start since returning to the Hoops. Although Harrison would certainly make her part in the first half, it was one of her starters from last time out who got the scoring up and running. With barely two minutes on the clock, Maria McAneny grabbed the first goal of the game, scoring from close range, tucking home a move from the right-hand side. It just four more minutes for the Celts to double their advantage as Jenny Smith got on the scoresheet for the second time this season against Friday evening’s opponents. Producing a clever finish into the bottom corner, it was the perfect start to Friday night football under the lights for Celtic. It was very much one way traffic in the first half as the Celts created chance after chance, with both Shannon McGregor and Bruna coming close. Just before 20 minutes, the Hoops had a third as Abi Harrison grabbed her first of three for the evening, tapping the ball home at the back post from a delivery into the box. The striker’s first start got even better just before the break as she secured a brace, smashing home a half-volleyed effort into the back of the net. Heading into the second half, with all three points all but secured, Elena Sadiku was able to make changes to her side as the Hoops pushed for more. With the introduction of the likes of Mathilde Carstens, and debutant Momo Nakao, the Hoops continued to look threatening. And Harrison was able to complete her hat-trick just before the hour mark, staying composed to tuck the ball home into the bottom corner. The Celts went on to match their first half tally of goals, with a further four in the second as both Jenny Smith and Maria McAneny added to their tally. Striking the ball into the bottom corner with an arrowed finish from outside the area, Smith secured her brace and Celtic’s sixth of the evening. As the game entered the closing stages, substitute Kit Loferski got in on the act, smashing home a finish at the second attempt inside the area after a delivery into the box fell her way. And there was time for one more player to add to their tally, with McAneny rounding off the scoring from the penalty spot after Colette Cavanagh was fouled by the goalkeeper. It was an impressive way for the Ghirls to get back to winning ways with a comprehensive victory at Tannadice Park. That result sets Sadiku and her squad up for another big match on the horizon, with a visit to Petershill Park next week as the Hoops face off against Glasgow City in the SWPL. CELTIC: Daugherty.
