Elena Sadiku: We’re happy to be through to the next round

Sunday afternoon saw Celtic FC Women kick-off their Sky Sports Cup campaign, and it was a successful start as they defetaed Spartans 3-1 to book their place in the next round of the competition. Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, Elena Sadiku said: “It wasn’t our best performance, but we got the job done and are through to the quarter-finals. That was the main goal coming into the game. ‘We said before, we want to try and get far in the cup competitions this season.’ “This was obviously a part of that, so we’re happy that we are through to the next round now. “We know that we are going to face teams like that. Obviously, Spartans go out and make it hard for us. They were really compact in their formation and it can sometimes be harder to break those teams down. “So when we create set-plays, it’s about taking those chances and making sure that we get great deliveries into the box and finishes. “We have been speaking about that, and it was good that we can take those chances.” Sunday’s match also marked a special occasion for captain, Kelly Clark, who took her place on the pitch for Celtic for the 350th time. Clark has played a big role for over a decade with Celtic, reaching another incredible landmark during the win over Spartans. And the Celtic boss paid tribute to the skipper, praising not only her performances this season, but her impact as a whole.“Kelly is a special player and person as well,” she said. “She is one of the best captains I’ve seen, in terms of being reliable and trustworthy. ‘She’s been so consistent this season. She has been one of our best players.’ “For Kelly to make 350 appearances, she is a legend for Celtic FC Women when it comes to appearances. “She is so important for us. How she behaves, the leadership, she is very inspirational. Kelly is a great leader, a great captain, and we are really happy to have her in the team.” The Hoops will now discover their quarter-final opponents on Tuesday, but next up is a return to SWPL action this Sunday when they play host to Motherwell at New Douglas Park. The Head Coach added: “When we get back in, we’ll look back at the game and look to put the levels up. Motherwell are a strong team. “So it will be about getting back to focusing on us and making sure that we have a great training week before our next game.” Celtic v Motherwell, Sunday, October 12 (KO: 2pm), New Douglas Park, Hamilton GET TICKETSFixturesSpartans FC Women Vs.
