Sky Sports Cup Sunday, February 01, 2026Broadwood Stadium RANGERS…3 (Wilkinson 23, Berry 44, 90+1) CELTIC…3 (McAneny 17, Lawton 26, Pritchard 38) Rangers win 4-2 on penalties Celtic FC Women suffered penalty shoot-out defeat, losing out in the Sky Sports Cup semi-final. With the scoring ending 3-3 and neither side being separated after 120 minutes, it came down to spot-kicks, with the Ghirls narrowly losing out. Having made a winning start to life at Celtic, Grant Scott came into his first derby outing with his side in full form. The Head Coach made three changes to the side that defeat Montrose 1-0 at New Douglas Park last weekend. Lisa Rodgers returned between the sticks, whilst there was also a return for Momo Nakao in midfield. Making her first start as a Celtic player, Poppy Pritchard was in from the beginning, leading the line after Rangers at Broadwood. And the Manchester City loanee looked bright from the offset, causing the home side all sorts of danger with her pace. It was Pritchard who would play her part in the opening goal of the game too as Maria McAneny fired Celtic ahead, 17 minutes into the match. Having worked the ball well through the thirds, Pritchard looked to cut inside and get a shot off. Seeing her path to goal blocked off, it was eventually worked out to McAneny, who took a touch before striking home to give Celtic the lead. That would prove to be the first goal in what was a dramatic half of action with both sides vying for a place in the final. It was the home side who would strike next, levelling up from the penalty spot as Katie Wilkenson struck home from 12-yards out. The Celts responded well to that set back though, and just three minutes after conceding, would retake the lead before the half hour mark. Following an inch perfect pass in behind the Rangers defence by Pritchard, Emma Lawton showcased brilliant persistence, which gave her the chance to force the ball home at the second attempt, and regain the lead. Things looked to get even better for Celtic before the break too, after winning a spot-kick with seven minutes left in normal time. Morgan Cross showcased good footwork to cut inside her marker, who fouled the winger inside the box, with Celtic having a penalty of their own. Having played her part in the opening two goals, up stepped Pritchard to dispatch from the spot and give Celtic a 3-1 lead. With the match heading towards half-time, the home side did pull one back through Laura Berry though, cutting Celtic’s deficit just before the break. That set back didn’t seem to effect the Ghirls either heading into the second 45 minutes, with Grant Scott’s side enjoying large spells of the game. The Hoops were doing well to contain Rangers, pressing high up the pitch and winning free kicks in dangerous areas to send into the box. With time ticking away and Celtic continuing to withstand Rangers pressure, ultimately, they would fall to another late goal. Laura Berry was once again on hand to score in stoppage time, this time in the second half, levelling up the game with just a few minutes left to go. That goal sent the game into extra time, and Celtic were once again strong in that period too, pushing forward with a few chances, particularly in the first stage of extra time. Maria McAneny tested the goalkeeper with a powerful free kick on the edge, which she tipped round the post. The Celts were also awarded their second penalty of the game after a Rangers defender was judged to have handled the ball inside the area. Up stepped Saoirse Noonan on this occasion, but the striker couldn’t convert this time, with Jemma Fife producing a strong stop to deny the Irish forward. Neither side could find a way to goal in extra-time, and the game was to be separate by penalties. But it was a cruel way for Celtic to lose out, with Claire Walsh and Maria McAneny both seeing efforts from the spot saved. The Ghirls deserved more from their performance, but it wasn’t to be as they narrowly lost out in the Sky Sports Cup semi-final.
