Ghirls lose out to Hearts at the Oriam

ScottishPower Women’s Premier LeagueWednesday, April 1 2026The Oriam HEARTS…4 (O.G 41, Husband 45, Timms 47, John 70) CELTIC…1 (Noonan 58)   Celtic FC Women suffered defeat in the capital on Wednesday evening, losing out 4-1 against Hearts. After falling two behind just before the break, the Hoops were then reduced to ten early in the second half. Saoirse Noonan looked to try pull the Celts back into things. But Hearts restored their three-goal lead and sealed all three points. Wednesday’s match marked a return to action for Grant Scott’s side, who’s last match had come on Sunday, March 22 against Partick Thistle. The Hoops came into the match looking to continue their unbeaten run in the league under Scott, making the trip to the capital. The opening 45 minutes proved to be quite a quiet affair, with neither side having many openings in the first half. When pushing forward on the break, things just weren’t quite falling the Ghirls’ way as they approached the final third. Their best opening of the half came through Saoirse Noonan, who picked up the ball and did well to turn her marker. As the striker looked to get a shot off on goal, it went wide of the target, not yet troubling the Hearts goalkeeper. With the half coming to a close, and neither side really threatening, the Celts were hit with a double blow at the end of the first 45. The first coming via an own goal, with Lisa Rodgers unable to get connection on a deep, and looping cross sent into the box. The home side then doubled their lead right on the stroke of half time as Erin Husband turned home the ball from a corner sent into the box. It was far from the ideal end to the half for the Hoops, who found themselves two goals behind and with work to do. And things got worse for Celtic at the beginning of the second half as the Ghirls were reduced to ten, with Hearts being handed the chance to score a third from the spot. Maddi Wilde was judged to have handled the ball as she looked to block an effort from close range on the line. Up stepped Georgia Timms, who tucked home a powerful penalty to hand the Edinburgh side a three-goal lead. It was a tough job from there for the Celts. But Scott’s side quickly looked to pick themselves back up. And they managed to pull one back just before the hour mark through Saoirse Noonan, who cut the deficit to two with a tidy finish beyond the Hearts goalkeeper in the box. The Ghirls thought they had a second back shortly after through Noonan once more, who headed home a Tara O’Hanlon cross into the box. But Maria McAneny was judged to have fouled the Hearts defender, with the referee blowing up for a foul. Despite showing fight to get back in the game, Hearts regained their three-goal advantage, as Carly John produced a superb finish, giving Rodgers no chance between the sticks. It was a disappointing night in the capital for the Hoops, who tasted defeat under Grant Scott for the first time in the league. They will quickly look to bounce back on Monday as they welcome Rangers to New Douglas Park for the Glasgow derby.FixturesHearts Women Vs. Celtic Women – Wed, Apr 1st 2026, 19:00
