Ghirls round off campaign with emphatic victory at Paradise

SWPL Sunday, May 11, 2025New Douglas Park CELTIC…6 (Ashworth-Clifford 5, 35, McAneny 6, Harrison 56, Cross 70, Noonan 80) MOTHERWELL…0 Celtic FC Women rounded the season off with victory at Paradise, defeating Motherwell 6-0 in the sun at Paradise. Three goals in each half seen the Ghirls round off the campaign in positive style, sealing the final three points of the season. With just one match left, the Hoops returned to where the season all kicked off at Celtic Park, marking their return to Paradise. Opening the season with an emphatic 9-0 win over Dundee United that day, it was Lucy Ashworth-Clifford who kicked off the scoring. And it was to be the same player who would open the scoring on Sunday afternoon as the winger fired home the first goal of the game inside the opening five minutes. Driving in from the left, the winger struck a powerful effort into the back of the net, scoring her first of two for the afternoon. It took just one minute for Celtic to add to their tally as Maria McAneny scored a quick-fire second. A brilliantly floated cross towards the back post by Saoirse Noonan found the run of the midfielder, who nodded the ball home into the back of the net. After providing for McAneny’s headed strike, Noonan looked to turn goal scorer and was unfortunate not to find the net shortly after. The Ireland internationalist tried her luck with a superb strike from distance, which struck the crossbar before being cleared by the visitors. With it very much all being Celtic throughout the game as third soon came the Hoops way, with Ashworth-Clifford grabbing her second of the afternoon. Putting pressure on the Motherwell defence, the number 22 did extremely well to win back possession. Running through one-on-one, Ashworth-Clifford then remained, rounding the goalkeeper before tucking the ball home into an empty net. It was a dominant first half display from the Celts as they aimed to finish the season strongly. And they matched those levels heading into the second half, with three further goals in the second 45 minutes. Abi Harrison kicked off the second half scoring, turning the ball home from a corner inside the six-yard box. Substitute Morgan Cross soon followed with a smart finish off her own, turning the ball home from a superb delivery on the left by Ashworth-Clifford, who was named Player of the Match after a superb performance. Before things were rounded off with just ten minutes to play as Saoirse Noonan took her tally for the season to 31 goals, heading the ball home from close range at the back post. That result rounded off what has been another historic, but tough campaign with an impressive 6-0 victory at Paradise CELTIC: Daughety, Bruna, Clark, Barclais (Dawson 74), Smith (Cross 56), Ashworth-Clifford, Momo, McAneny (Cavanagh 56), Gallacher (M.
