SWPL Sunday, March 02, 2025Meadowbank Stadium HIBERNIAN…1 (Adams 23) CELTIC…0 Celtic FC Women slipped to defeat in the capital, losing out 1-0 against Hibernian at Meadowbank Stadium. An Eilidh Adams first half header was all that would separate the sides on what was a frustrating afternoon for the Hoops. As the Celts headed into matchday 22 in the SWPL, and the final regular fixture before the split gets underway, they made their way to the capital to take on Hibs. Returning from the international break, Elena Sadiku made just the one change to her side which was held to a 2-2 draw against Glasgow City just before the break. Aiming to try and get three points on the board before the split, the Celts looked to get forward early on and try make a bright start as they have done on a few occasions in recent matches. It was a more even affair in the opening stages though, with very little between the teams as they looked to size one another up. With few chances to write home about at the beginning of the half, Morgan Cross looked a threat down the right, using her pace to try cause danger. Lucy Ashworth-Clifford also looked to cause an opening in the first 20 minutes, sending a free-kick towards the back post, but it evaded any of her teammates. After looking to get on the front foot early on, the Hoops found themselves fall behind on 23 minutes as Eilidh Adams opened the scoring. Heading the ball home from close range, the Hibs forward gave Kelsey Daugherty no chance between the sticks, bulleting the ball into the net. The Celts did look to recover quickly in the first half as Cross broke free with some good movement and a clever touch. But the covering defender did well to get across and win back possession as she approached the area. Two big chances did fall Celtic’s way in quick succession as they aimed to find that all important leveller. Both Murphy Agnew and Maria McAneny had chances inside the area but were unfortunate not to find the net with their headed efforts. With the Hoops pushing for a way back into the match, Kelsey Daugherty also had to remain switched on, making a big stop to deny the home side a second. Heading into the second half, the Ghirls came out the brighter of the two sides, aiming to make a fast start to the half. Pressing high up the pitch, the ball almost worked its way to Murphy Agnew on a few occasions, but the passes were just too heavy for the American forward. The Celtic boss did look to make changes to her side in the second half, with the introductions of Saoirse Noonan, Abi Harrison and Kit Loferski. All three players looked to make an impact, with Noonan quickly seeing a free-kick saved by the Hibs goalkeeper. The Celts pushed until the end but ultimately couldn’t find a way to goal on what was a frustrating afternoon for Elena Sadiku’s side. Heading into the split, there is some time now between the Ghirls’ next fixture, which comes on Sunday, March 16 as they travel to Edinburgh once more to face Hearts.
