Ghirls suffer defeat at Ibrox

SWPL Friday, November 14, 2025Ibrox Stadium RANGERS…3 (Berry 38, Wilkinson 60, McAuley 84) CELTIC…2 (Smith 3, Noonan 72)   Celtic FC Women slipped to defeat at Ibrox on Friday evening, narrowly losing out 3-2 against Rangers. The Hoops made the perfect start after Jenny Smith fired Celtic ahead just minutes into the game, before pegged back in the first half. The second half seen the Ghirls fall behind, before Saoirse Noonan levelled things up once more. But it was the home side who would get the final evening, which would be a frustrating result after such a dominant first half display. With the Celts coming into proceedings looking to build on their recent wins, they made a fast start to the game at Ibrox. With just three minutes on the clock, Jenny Smith fired Celtic ahead making the best possible start to the Glasgow derby. Morgan Cross’ delivery looked to find the run of Saoirse Noonan, who couldn’t connect with her shot. But it would fall to the feet of Smith, who scored her first of the season and giving the Hoops a deserved early advantage. It was a dominant first half display from the Ghirls, with Morgan Cross causing plenty of havoc for the home side’s backline. Both Cross and Gallacher seen effort inside the box blocked, whilst McAneny also came close after a corner made it’s way towards the Celtic midfielder. Saoirse Noonan also had a chance to double the Hoops’ lead following more good work from Cross, down the right. Firing the ball across goal, the striker took control before spinning and getting a shot off on goal, which was saved. Unfortunately for Cross, her game came to a close in the first after an electric start, suffering from a knock in the opening 45 minutes. It was when the winger was off receiving treatment that the Celts would suffer, with the home side scoring a leveller. Laura Berry was on hand to turn home after Celtic failed to clear from a corner, which seen the two teams go in at the break level. In the second half, the Ghirls struggled to get a strange hold of proceedings, with Rangers coming out arguably the better of the two sides. That would show on the hour mark as Katie Wilkinson put the Ibrox side ahead, seeing the Celts fall behind. However, they were able to produce a response as Saoirse Noonan fired the ball home from close range. Momo Nakao’s delivery into the box was attacked by Emma Lawton, before falling the way of the Irish forward, who made no mistake with her finish. That wasn’t to be all the scoring unfortunately for the Ghirls though, as the home side scored a late winner to take home all three points through Mia McAuley. It was a frustrating outcome for Elena Sadiku’e side, especially after creating so many clear-cut openings in the first half and finding themselves level late on. The Ghirls will look to bounce back before the next international break as they return home on Sunday against Partick Thistle.FixturesRangers Women Vs. Celtic Women – Fri, Nov 14th 2025, 19:30
