On holiday Monday (May 5), over 50 enthusiastic fundraisers hit the streets and walked around 10 miles in the glorious sunshine. From the Billy McNeill statue in his home town of Bellshill to the statue of Cesar at the bottom of The Celtic Way, the magnificent group took part in Celtic FC Foundation’s ‘In The Footsteps of Cesar’ event, delivered in partnership with the Billy McNeill Commemoration Charity. Supporters of both charities paid tribute to the legendary Celtic Captain, while raising an outstanding net total in excess of £14,000 (with fundraising still ongoing) and proceeds will be split equally between the two organisations. The group began their walk at 10am by heading for the first stop of the day, the Jimmy Johnstone Memorial Garden in Viewpark, as they honoured another Celtic great. Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as passers-by offered encouragement with cheers and the occasional beep of a car horn. Further along the route, the group paused at the memorial dedicated to Celtic’s Founding Fathers in St. Peter’s Cemetery, before the final stretch to Celtic Park. The hardy group finished by walking down the Celtic Way towards Cesar’s statue in the blazing sunshine and were met by friends and family, along with Billy’s wife, Liz and daughter, Paula, who kindly joined us to congratulate everyone on finishing this year’s challenge. Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton, said: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in Monday’s walk and to all those who generously supported their efforts. “It was a special day, honouring the legacy of our greatest ever Captain, and it was a privilege to walk alongside so many supporters of the Foundation and our friends at the Billy McNeill Commemoration Charity. “The incredible backing we’ve received for initiatives like this throughout the season has been nothing short of inspiring. Once again, it speaks volumes about the kindness and generosity of the Celtic Family and continues to demonstrate the uniqueness of this Football Club.” Eddie Lynas, Chairman of the Billy McNeill Commemoration Charity, added: “We would like to thank Celtic FC Foundation and everyone who has supported the event and given up their time for two fantastic charities. We hope everyone enjoyed their day.” The Foundation would like to thank all of those who made the event possible, including the Billy McNeill Commemoration Charity, Mooney’s Bar, Tommy O’Connell and, of course, all of the wonderful participants and everyone who has supported them. If you would like to get behind their efforts, you can still donate HERE. Thank you for your magnificent support.
