Late goal inflicts defeat upon the Ghirls

SWPL Friday, March 28, 2025New Douglas Park CELTIC…1 (Noonan 59) GLASGOW CITY…2 (Lovera 23, Smit 86)   Celtic FC Women slipped to late defeat on Friday evening, losing out 2-1 against Glasgow City at New Douglas Park. After falling behind in the opening 45 minutes, Saoirse Noonan’s fired home a leveller in the second half. However, a late goal from a set piece delivered all three points Glasgow City’s way, with the visitors taking home victory. Following a brief break from action, the Ghirls returned to New Douglas Park for the first time since early January on Friday evening, welcoming Glasgow City to Hamilton. It kicked-off as an even affair between the sides, with neither of the teams having many early opportunities to test the goalkeeper. The Hoops started on the front foot, looking the more likely of the two sides to create an opening. But despite that, it was the visitors who would grab the first goal of the game. After breaking free on the left, Brenna Lovera found the far top corner with what initially appeared to be a cross to score the opener for her side. Finding themselves behind, the Celts continued to push in the opening 45 minutes with Saoirse Noonan and the returning Kit Loferski picking up some good areas inside the box. And despite enjoying some good passages of play, Elena Sadiku’s side found themselves going in behind at the break. It was the second half where the Hoops would really push and test the Glasgow City goal. First, it was Emma Lawton who would come close to forcing Celtic level, seeing an effort cleared off the line. Lucy Ashworth-Clifford’s cross from the left-hand side looked to find the direct run of Loferski but would instead run all the way through to the full-back. Talking a touch to set herself, Lawton directed a low effort on target, which beat the keeper, but not the City defender waiting on the line. Maria McAneny also looked to direct an effort on target after a series of corners for the Hoops, forcing a good save. But the referee had awarded a free kick in any case. After knocking on the door at the start of the half, the Celts finally pulled themselves level thanks to a Saoirse Noonan strike. A pinpoint pass from Lawton on the right, found the run of the Irish forward, who made no mistake with her finish, smashing home on the half volley. Having grabbed an equaliser in the game, it continued to be the Hoops who were in the ascendancy, with Murphy Agnew next to force a smart stop from Lee Gibson in the City goal. However, despite that, it was once again the visitors who would retake the lead, scoring from the second phase of a set piece to secure all three points. That late goal was enough to seal victory for the away side, who came away as 2-1 winners, inflicting defeat upon the Celts. Heading into the international break, the Ghirls now have some time between their next fixture, a derby outing against Rangers on Sunday, April 13. CELTIC: Daugherty.
