This Sunday (August 4) is Flag Day at Paradise, and Celtic are delighted that Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig will unfurl the league flag ahead of the 4.30pm kick-off against Kilmarnock. The Celtic legend was part of the most famous team in the club’s history, and he is sure to receive the warmest of welcomes from supporters when he steps out on to the pitch at Celtic Park. Jim made his Celtic debut in a European Cup-Winners’ Cup tie against Dutch side, Go Ahead Deventer, in October 1965, and over the next seven years would go on to play 231 times for the Hoops, scoring six goals. In that time, he won seven league titles, four Scottish Cups, four League Cups and, of course, the European Cup in 1967, when Jock Stein’s Celtic side defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. Jim’s last game for Celtic came at Hampden in May 1972 when the Hoops beat Hibernian 6-1 in the Scottish Cup final. Known by his team-mates as ‘Cairney’ – a nickname coined from a 1960s TV show called That Man Craig when the main character was played by actor and Celtic fan, John Cairney – Jim later enjoyed a long and successful career as a dentist. Over the years he has also been involved in the media for many years, as a broadcaster and writer, while since 2019 he has represented Celtic as a Club Ambassador.
