This Saturday, Team GB Taekwondo athlete, Rebecca McGowan will make her bid for Olympic gold in Paris. A member of the Caledonian Taekwondo Club in Anniesland, Rebecca is also a Celtic fan and she was delighted as Brendan Rodgers’ side kicked off the defence of their Premiership title with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock last weekend. The 24-year-old from Dumbarton is competing the +67kg weight category – a fitting number for the Celtic supporter to be competing in, and hopefully a good omen too! Ahead of competing in Paris, the Official Celtic FC Podcast caught up with Rebecca, and she explained that while Taekwondo was a sport she grew to love, Celtic has been a lifelong love.“You’re just born into that,” she explained. “I used to go to the games with my Dad when I was a little girl but then Taekwondo competitions came along and they were always on a Saturday or a Sunday. “But my Dad and my little brother still go to the Celtic games, so it’s always run in the family to support Celtic and go and watch them play.” And having been involved in Taekwondo since she was a young girl, Rebecca is now hoping that the culmination of those years of dedication with be a place on the winner’s podium in Paris this Saturday night and a gold medal draped around her neck. “There’s never been a Scottish Taekwondo athlete going to the Olympics,” she said, “so that’s a massive hope for me – that it can bring light to a sport that is so fantastic and amazing to watch, and so amazing to participate in.” DOWNLOAD & LISTEN NOW Listen on the go on your phone or tablet using the links below: 🎧 Click here to get the podcast on your favourite platform 🎧 Apple Podcasts 🎧 Spotify 🎧 Podbean Make sure you like and subscribe to the Official Celtic FC Podcast wherever you get your podcasts so you never miss an episode, and keep in touch on our social media @CelticFC or by email at [email protected] to get your questions in for future episodes.
