Paul Elliott on Celtic, HORROR Chelsea injury, SPFL Serie A stars & Facing Maradona | The Warm-Up

His time in Glasgow was brief, but brilliant. Three decades on, Paul Elliott is still considered one of the best centre backs to grace Scottish football. Joining Kris Boyd, Steven Naismith and Chris Sutton for The Warm-Up’s latest big interview the defender talks us through his career starting from his early days in England with Charlton, Luton and Aston Villa. A career cut short following a horrific tackle at Chelsea, Elliott also covers his time in prime Serie A, going head-to-head with van Basten, Maradona, and other legendary stars. Now working as an equality campaigner within the game and as Charlton Athletic’s vice chairman, he also talks extensively about his two years at Celtic under Billy McNeill, where he was named Scotland’s Player of the Year and took on a Rangers side which was asserting its dominance over the Scottish game. Also, up for discussion is: The night he joined Rangers’ title party ‘The best rivalry in the world’ Paul McStay and the Celtic greats Why Scotland are lucky to have Steve Clarke 00:00 Starts 01:40 “They came to watch Mark Walters” 05:25 Facing giants in Serie A 06:55 Maradona got me sent off 09:20 Brian Clough wanted to sign me 09:55 ‘Did you learn the language?’ 10:18 Expectations at Celtic 12:40 A move to Rangers 14:00 A blue plaque in Victorias 16:14 Paul ‘The Hat’ McStay 18:50 ‘Mark Walters stitched me up!’ 20:05 Racism in football and society 25:00 Made the Gorbals look like Mayfair! 27:27 Nothing like life in Glasgow 29:16 Time to say goodbye 31:51 His injury at Chelsea 35:00 The lesson I learned 41:45 ‘I left everything out there’ 43:55 The new Scots in Italy 46:23 Studious Stevie Clarke 50:45 My brother, Big Billy 🎧 Listen to The Warm-Up wherever you get your podcasts.
