It was a day of celebration to kick off the new season for Celtic FC Women, who unfurled the league flag as Champions for the first time ever at Celtic Park. Saturday afternoon’s match marked another historic moment in the Ghirls’ history, but also got the 2024/25 campaign underway. And it proved to be an impressive afternoon from Elena Sadiku’s side, who ran out 9-0 winners against Dundee United on the opening day. The goals were spread throughout the team, with seven different players getting their name on the scoresheet (main story image L-R: Bruna Lourenco, Jenny Smith, Maria McAneny, Amy Gallacher, Signe Carstens, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford, Saoirse Noonan). One of those included summer signing, Saoirse Noonan, who admitted it was a dream come true to grab a double at Paradise. Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, she said: “I think having Flag Day is such a brilliant occasion for everyone. “Obviously, it’s the first game to kick off the new season, and I think we did ourselves justice. ‘Hopefully we can go on from here now and kick on after a good result.’ “It’s something dreams are made of really. Even getting my first start here. That was one thing, and then obviously getting on the scoresheet. “It was a huge effort from everyone, and I’m just delighted I was able to get on the scoresheet.”Noonan wasn’t the only player to kick-off the new season with a double, and tick off a dream moment in her football career on Saturday. For life-long Celtic fan and Academy graduate, Maria McAneny, she started off the campaign in the best possible way, playing her part with two goals against Dundee United. The midfielder is hoping that is just the first of many goals for the season ahead as she expressed her delight at the performance. “I think all the girls put in some shift over pre-season and that has shown here at Celtic Park,” she said. ‘Hopefully we can just push on from here and continue winning our games.’ “I said to Saoirse before the game that she better get a hat-trick, and she was only one away! “Scoring twice today, these were my first goals here and hopefully there is still many more to come. So it’s an incredible feeling.“FixturesCeltic Women Vs. Dundee United Women – Sat, Aug 10th 2024, 13:00
