Terry Butcher: O** F*** ARRESTS, Maradona BEEF & Rangers GLORY | The Warm-Up

Kris Boyd and Steven Naismith are joined by Rangers and England legend Terry Butcher for The Warm-Up’s latest big interview. Captain for club and country, Butcher goes back to his early days with Bobby Robson at Ipswich and charts the path that led him to Ibrox, where he became a key figure in the club’s nine-in-a-row run. He reveals how his career could have taken him to Old Trafford and talks about the culture shock that awaited him in Glasgow. He also explains how an early encounter with the late Davie Cooper convinced him to move north. Butcher’s time in Scotland was certainly eventful as he became a trusted leader under Graeme Souness, won three league titles and two league cups and established Rangers as a dominant force in Scotland and Europe. In the interview, he also reflects on his experiences with England, which included World Cups, bloodstained bandages and a now notorious encounter with Diego Maradona. And, on the subject of lingering resentment, he talks about Old Firm arrests, criminal records and why he still has beef with Frank McAvennie. Looking to the most recent chapters of his career the interview also covers his time as a manager, which saw him enjoy success with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Motherwell, spells with Partick Thistle and Hibernian and as Scotland assistant. 00:00 STARTS 02:15 “I didn’t think I was good enough” 03:58 “I don’t know why we have signed you, you’re useless” 06:09 Sir Bobby Robson 07:43 “Bobby made you feel 10 feet tall” 14:00 Striving for perfection 15:35 The move to Rangers 17:00 Overtures in Mexico 18:15 Man United wanted me 20:00 Davie Cooper was a breath of fresh air 21:30 I underestimated Rangers 23:00 “Show the crowd you’re ready” 26:00 “You should see the tattoos on the women” 27:30 Team talks with Graeme Souness and Walter Smith 30:05 Breaking a leg 33:20 You’re under arrest 37:35 I’ll never forgive Maradona 42:15 Meeting Diego – again 45:08 Italia 90 48:25 Managerial ambitions 52:11 Managerial realities 52:33 Getting the sack 54:09 Back home to Scotland 58:53 Joining the Tartan Army 01:04:21 Boozegate 01:07:55 A return to management? 🎧 Listen to The Warm-Up wherever you get your podcasts.
