Max Levitas was a child of Jewish refugees who had fled from the dreadful anti-Semitic pogroms in imperial Russia to begin a new life in Ireland. His father had worked with Jim Larkin in Dublin and fought for the rights of workers there although his activities saw him blacklisted and made finding work difficult.
