Lemon, Buzz Bomb, Lisbon Lion. These names are synonymous with Bobby Lennox. We all know he’s apart of the immortal Lisbon Lions, but did you know he was the last lion to wear the hoops?
He came on as a sub to help win the league title famously known as the “Ten men won the league”. It was Lennox’s 11th league winners medal. He played his last game in the Scottish Cup Final, helping Celtic to win 1-0 against Rangers in 1980 – his 8th winners medal, a record to this day.
Obviously the highlight was that sunny Lisbon evening in 1967, however Lemon always looks back fondly on beating Real Madrid in Alfredo Di Stéfano’s testimonial. Buzz Bomb scored the only goal and the trophy sits proudly in Celtic’s cabinet.
So it was poetic that Lennox would face the mighty Real Madrid in his last European adventure 13 years on.
The home leg was packed out – there were massive crowds queueing for tickets. This game holds a lot of great memories for supporters.
That’s the reason why we have chosen this game to show on the big screen in the St Matthew’s Auditorium, which is laid out like a cinema theatre (with plenty room for wheelchair users). The playing fields beside St Matthew’s are where Bobby would train and help local kids bring on their football skills.
We will also be showing the highlights of the Alfredo Di Stéfano testimonial before the main feature. There will be a signed 1980 Celtic jersey for raffle, and a snack stall. Bobby will be there plus other ex-players, so please come along for a great day but to also support the Bobby Lennox Statue campaign. This should be the final year of fundraising so don’t miss out on this great day for nostalgia.
We have kept the ticket prices low at £5 for all ages. Doors open at 1:30pm with the features kicking off at 3pm. Contact [email protected] or @bobbylennox67 for ticket.
The venue is St Matthew’s High School Jacks Rd, Saltcoats KA21 5SH.
